How to pass the Tennessee knowledge test

  1. Read the handbook. Every question comes from the official Tennessee manuals; the handbook page links to the agency's own copies.
  2. Practice test by test. Each numbered test mixes Tennessee law with the national road rules, like the real exam.
  3. Read every explanation. Especially for answers you got right by guessing.
  4. Simulate the real exam on the category page when you pass the tests comfortably.

Tennessee written test format

Test Questions Pass mark Minimum age
Car 30 24 correct (6 mistakes allowed) 15 years
Motorcycle 30 24 correct (6 mistakes allowed) 15 years for the Class PM learner permit; 16 years for the Class M licence
CDL 50 40 correct (10 mistakes allowed) 21 years

Car. The Class D knowledge test has 30 questions, allows 60 minutes and requires a minimum score of 80 percent. It is offered in English and Spanish.

Motorcycle. Class M applicants take a motorcycle knowledge test and an on-cycle skills test. The state does not publish the item count for the motorcycle test, so the Class D format is used here as a working figure.

CDL. Applicants aged 18 to 20 may hold a Tennessee CDL restricted to intrastate operation of a Class A or B vehicle that needs no endorsement. The state does not publish the item count for the general knowledge test.
